Palin Concentrates on Economy

Palin Shifts From Character Questions To Economic Solutions During Valley Visit

VP Nominee Wins Cheers From Supporters In Coal Country

POSTED: 10:18 pm EDT October 12, 2008
UPDATED: 10:41 pm EDT October 12, 2008

ST. CLAIRSVILLE, Ohio -- The McCain-Palin bus, dubbed the "Straight Talk Express," rolled into Brush Run Park Sunday with typical fanfare and flash.
However, on stage, Palin appeared to have followed John McCain's lead in toning down recent rhetoric about her opponent's character.

Instead, Palin talked to supporters about how she and McCain view the economic concerns of Ohio Valley voters.

"(You want) a plant gate to walk through, and a paycheck to count on and with lower taxes, a pro-growth agenda," said Palin. "And with spending control in Washington, we're going to get this economy back on track."

Palin did have criticism for the Democrats, saying Barack Obama doesn't understand small-town America.

Palin also said it's not negative to encourage voters to check out Obama's record on abortion rights.

When Palin spoke about her ticket's plan to use clean-burning coal for energy, the coal-country audience responded by chanting "Mine, Baby, Mine," a play on the popular domestic oil slogan, "Drill, baby, drill."

Palin said she liked the new chant and asked the crowd if she could use it elsewhere on the campaign trail.

"(Vice presidential candidate) Joe Biden said there's no such thing as clean coal," Palin said. "He said even if there were, an Obama administration would be fine with China using it, but not using it here at home. So, whether Joe Biden approves it or not, John McCain and I are going to develop clean coal technology here in America."

Palin's speech at Brush Run Park was less than a mile from the campus of Ohio University Eastern, where Biden will speak Tuesday.

CBS: Palin the Second Coming of Reagan

National Review Online: Republicans Sigh In Relief As VP Nominee Embodies Spirit Of Comeback Reagan

(National Review Online) This column was written by John J. Pitney Jr.

‘The moral elements,” Clausewitz wrote, “are among the most important in war.” He was talking about such things as morale, confidence, and devotion to a cause. With a moral advantage, an outnumbered force may win a surprise victory. Without it, well-equipped legions may go down to defeat.

That’s the significance of Sarah Palin’s debate performance. After all the lousy news of recent weeks, Republicans were starting to get gloomy. Mostly because of financial turmoil, Barack Obama’s lead in the polls edged upward. John McCain’s “suspension” of his campaign failed to have the desired effect, and his position on the Paulson plan put him at odds with many Republicans.

Palin herself contributed to the gloom by giving awkward interviews on television. On the morning of the debate, NBC’s Chuck Todd came close to declaring the race to be over: “All the trend lines are pointing in Obama’s direction. . . . [Pointing to a series of battleground-state polls] This should really scare the McCain campaign. This thing - it’s at a tipping point.”

There was speculation that a poor Palin performance could decisively tip the election to Obama. Her supporters held their breath. A few minutes after she walked onto the stage, they could exhale. They were watching the poised and feisty Palin of the Republican convention, not the hesitant Palin of the Gibson and Couric shows. The election wasn’t over yet. She bolstered Republican morale in other ways, too.

In politics as in war, you have to rally the troops against an opponent. You also have to pick the right target. Focusing her fire on Joe Biden would not have helped much, since most Republicans don’t have strong feelings about him. Instead, she went after the One. During the debate, she nodded to Biden while throwing verbal daggers at Obama:

“Barack Obama voted against funding troops there after promising that he would not do so. And Sen. Biden, I respected you when you called him out on that. You said that his vote was political and you said it would cost lives.”

“You also said that Barack Obama was not ready to be commander in chief. And I know again that you opposed the move he made to try to cut off funding for the troops and I respect you for that.”

As she did at the Republican convention, she reminded people at the grassroots that she is one of them. “I think we need a little bit of reality from Wasilla Main Street there, brought to Washington, D.C.” Once again, the liberal elites will sneer at her background as a hockey mom and small-town mayor. The more they sneer, the more they’ll fire up the Republican volunteers.

Nothing in politics touches Republicans as deeply as the memory of Ronald Reagan. A few weeks ago, Michael Reagan made a remarkable comment: “Wednesday night I watched the Republican National Convention on television and there, before my very eyes, I saw my Dad reborn; only this time he’s a she.” By making this comparison, he perhaps said more than he realized. The Gipper did not always shine in debates and press conferences. He made mistakes that worried his aides and political allies. Still, he had a way of coming back and reenergizing the ranks.

Admit It; She Kicked His Natural Behind!

UPDATE: Because I know she drives liberals crazy, I'll add this from Michelle Malkin:

Pause to reflect on this: She matched — and trumped several times — a man who has spent his entire adult life on the political stage, run for president twice, and as he mentioned several times, chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Sarah Palin looked presidential.

Joe Biden looked tired.

Sarah made history.

Biden is history.

***
Prediction: Watch for a whole new, severe strain of Palin Derangement Syndrome to begin tonight.

They hated her before tonight. They are going to pour on more unfathomable hate at a level we have never seen before.

Sarah, we’re praying for you.

Indeed.

[original post]

I don't need any links or polls or anyone else to tell me what I could see for myself.

I can't wait to hear all of the hemming and hawing but one thing is clear -- she objectively kicked his natural behind.

This woman --Sarah Palin -- is going to be a force for years and years and years in American politics!

All those idiots who have insisted this woman is dense or not qualified, shut the heck up. No one believes that stupidity and wishful thinking. You are going to have to deal with this woman fair and square. Like that cartoon of the moose said -- be afraid, be very afraid

Palin Performance Helps McCain Regain Political Footing

Analysts say Sarah Palin, with a cool and confident performance at Thursday night's debate, helped running mate John McCain regain his footing going into the final month of the presidential race.

Both presidential campaigns hit the trail Friday claiming victory in the vice presidential debate between Joe Biden and Sarah Palin, but it was Palin's cool and confident performance that prompted analysts to suggest that after more than a week of bad news for Republicans, John McCain can ride a new wind into the final month of the race.

The stakes were high for Palin going into the debate. A series of shaky interview performances led prominent conservatives -- much less independents and liberals -- to question her credentials.

The doubts were coupled with other bad news for McCain -- ongoing credit turmoil in the financial markets that didn't help the Arizona senator's poll numbers, despite his leading an emergency legislative powwow in Washington, and news that the Republican nominee was pulling out of the battleground state of Michigan.

But Palin pulled off a bravura performance, say analysts.

Ifill on Trial Tomorrow Night

by Janet Crain

Gwen Ifill will be on the trial of her life tomorrow night. If she can do her job and act as a fair and impartial moderator, it will make her career.

If on the other hand, she cannot, it will probably do more damage than can be offset by the anticipated sales from her upcoming book about Obama, scheduled for release in conjunction with the Presidential Inauguration. Should McCain win, the salability of her book will be greatly diminished.

Some are already crying "foul" due to her neglecting to disclose this conflict of interest.
