Loud crowd buoys John McCain in must-win state of Ohio

REPUBLICAN underdog John McCain seemed surprised by the chanting crowd that turned out to see him in chilly Cincinnati.

Midway through his boisterous rally, Senator McCain stopped to say: "What a crowd. What enthusiasm.

"Is there any doubt we're going to win this election, my friends? This is wonderful."

With 12 days to go, almost all opinion polls show Senator McCain's opponent, Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama, ahead by an average of seven points.

But one new poll broke ranks yesterday to hint at a narrowing of the race in the final stretch.

The Associated Press-GfK poll found Senator Obama leading by just one percentage point, on 44 per cent support.

Three weeks ago, the AP-GfK survey put him eight points in the lead.
With the drawcard of two popular Republican women - his running-mate, Sarah Palin, and country music star Gretchen Wilson, who sang Redneck Woman -- more than 12,000 people filled an airport hangar in Ohio's most conservative city.

Mrs Palin warmed the crowd up, thanking southwest Ohio for its welcome.
She said flying into Cincinnati, she had been amazed to look down and "see my face ploughed into a cornfield".

Republican-leaning Ohio is a bellwether for the election, and this year it has become vulnerable to the Democrats. Senator Obama is marginally ahead in the state, and Senator McCain cannot win the White House if he loses Ohio.
As the crowd chanted "Sarah, Sarah" and "Mac is Back", they also booed whenever Senator Obama's name was mentioned.

Some at the rally brought along photocopied home-made pamphlets with a picture of Uncle Sam that read "I want you - to keep Islam out of the White House".

Julie and George Thomas came along to the rally with five-year-old daughter Emily, who has cerebral palsy.

They said it was a bonus to see Mrs Palin, whose son, Trig, has Down syndrome and is also a special needs child.

Mr Thomas said he had considered bringing along a home-made sign reading "No More Mr Nice Guy" to urge Senator McCain to start taking the fight up to Senator Obama.

"I like the fact he's a true American hero," he said of Senator McCain, adding he had very "serious, serious concerns" about Senator Obama.

"Trust. Lack of being forthcoming on his past, lack of releasing information about the past," he said, citing Senator Obama's past associations with 1960s radical Bill Ayers and his former firebrand pastor, the Rev Jeremiah Wright.
George Hillis, 72, said he would never vote for Senator Obama because he was a "liar" and "has an extensive radical background associating with people who are not the type of people we want running the country".

Mr Hillis said he believed Senator McCain would win the election, despite what the polls said, because the silent majority of voters had started grumbling.
"We're starting to talk. We don't waste our breath until the election comes, but there's a movement going on now," he said.

Charlie Gibson: 'It's important to expose' Sarah Palin

So, instead of merely reporting the news, now reporters are the news?

Apparently Charlie Gibson thinks he is, anyway. He gave an interview to the Toledo Blade on October 5 as if his opinions of the race for the White House are somehow more important than the news of the candidates. You remember the candidates, don't you Chuck? You know, those guys who are actually going to be elected, the ones that you are supposed to be reporting on? Gibson spoke to the Toledo Blade's TV beat reporter Kirk Baird about an upcoming visit to Ohio's Bowling Green State University and he said a few pretty revealing things to the Blade about how the media are treating the campaign.

Like many of his ilk, he appears in this interview to show a disdain for small town America, he obviously pretends not to see any bias among his comrades, he excuses that bias he does see and interestingly he claimed it was the duty of the media to "expose" Sarah Palin — an interesting choice of words, for sure.

Gibson will be in Ohio for an ABC spectacle this coming week where they will arrange to discuss the next debate with what they are to claiming to be an "independent" group of Bowling Green University students. But, Gibson takes pains to say that Obama has "energized" students even as he claims they will speak to some that are for McCain.

ST. CLAIRSVILLE, Ohio -- The McCain-Palin bus, dubbed the "Straight Talk Express," rolled into Brush Run Park Sunday with typical fanfare and flash.
However, on stage, Palin appeared to have followed John McCain's lead in toning down recent rhetoric about her opponent's character.

Instead, Palin talked to supporters about how she and McCain view the economic concerns of Ohio Valley voters.

"(You want) a plant gate to walk through, and a paycheck to count on and with lower taxes, a pro-growth agenda," said Palin. "And with spending control in Washington, we're going to get this economy back on track."

Palin did have criticism for the Democrats, saying Barack Obama doesn't understand small-town America.

Palin also said it's not negative to encourage voters to check out Obama's record on abortion rights.

When Palin spoke about her ticket's plan to use clean-burning coal for energy, the coal-country audience responded by chanting "Mine, Baby, Mine," a play on the popular domestic oil slogan, "Drill, baby, drill."

Palin said she liked the new chant and asked the crowd if she could use it elsewhere on the campaign trail.

"(Vice presidential candidate) Joe Biden said there's no such thing as clean coal," Palin said. "He said even if there were, an Obama administration would be fine with China using it, but not using it here at home. So, whether Joe Biden approves it or not, John McCain and I are going to develop clean coal technology here in America."

Palin's speech at Brush Run Park was less than a mile from the campus of Ohio University Eastern, where Biden will speak Tuesday.

If Ohio polling looks like Chicago, 'thank' Brunner

"Well, I tell you what, it helps in Ohio that we've got Democrats in charge of the machines," Barack Obama said on Sept. 3.

Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner has a reputation as the most partisan state official in Ohio. And she works hard to earn it. The Democrat's latest stunt rejected absentee ballots for thousands of Republicans.

But it's not her first rodeo. Almost as soon as Brunner was elected in 2006, she tried to remove several Republican county elections officials, including Ohio Republican Party Chairman Robert Bennett. They accused her of "storm trooper tactics" to silence critics.

Then Brunner spread an alarm that Ohio's electronic voting machines were vulnerable to tampering - a favorite claim of the paranoid left. Elections officials who participated in Brunner's study called her conclusions over-hyped "leaps in logic" and said, "The report itself could be viewed as an attack on the elections system ... (that) planted seeds in the mind of the public to mistrust those who oversee elections."

Brunner also demanded an overhaul of voting methods just before the March primaries, causing meltdowns in some precincts.

And now she's hassling Republicans who want to vote for John McCain.

Two Hamilton County voters have sued, accusing her of "the disenfranchisement of thousands of voters."

The John McCain campaign sent out more than 1 million applications for absentee ballots to Republicans. Each had a line at the top next to a box: "I am a qualified elector."

Brunner sent a memo telling county election officials to reject those applications for absentee ballots if the box was not checked. "Failure to check the box leaves both the applicant and the board of elections without verification that the applicant is a 'qualified elector'," she wrote.

But that's contrary to state law and Brunner doesn't have the authority, according to the lawsuit and an opinion from Hamilton County's Republican Prosecutor Joe Deters.

Ohio law allows voters to request an absentee ballot on the back of a grocery sack if they want to, as long as they include their name, address, date of birth, signature and either a driver's license number, last four Social Security numbers or a valid picture I.D.

There is nothing in the law about checking a box to verify a qualified voter. The voter's signature is enough, because that's what is checked to send ballots, said Hamilton County Clerk of Courts Greg Hartmann, who ran against Brunner in 2006 and is now county chairman for the McCain-Palin campaign. "It's just bald partisanship," he said. "She's trying to disqualify likely McCain voters."

The Deters opinion said "it is equally reasonable that the squares are intended simply as bullet points in an inartfully designed application."

Brunner said, "While state law does not require a check box, the McCain-Palin campaign designed its form to require that voters check a box to affirmatively state they are qualified electors."

Sen. Gary Cates, R-West Chester didn't buy it. "This is not a time to give people the appearance that voters are being suppressed," he said.

Majority Floor Leader Sen. Tom Niehaus, R-New Richmond, said, "Take the politics out and you'd think the state's chief elections official would err on the side of allowing people to vote."

State law requires local officials to notify voters if their applications are rejected. That will cause confusion, especially for elderly absentee voters, Hartmann said. It's also costly and time consuming in an election year.

Since the Florida debacle in 2000, most states have made voting easier. Ohio now lets anyone get an absentee ballot. This year, Ohio could again decide a close election - and Brunner is inviting the kind of lawsuits and suspicions that destroy public trust.

She said Hamilton County "may face other lawsuits or even challenges to the rights of those whose applications they would process" if her memo is ignored.

Brunner's web site says she "wants to ensure that Ohio elections are free, fair, open and honest; and to encourage the highest level of participation in our democracy." So why reject 1,500 voters in Hamilton County and thousands more in Ohio?

An honest mistake? With Brunner's partisan record, not likely.

Laying litigation landmines to lawyer the outcome if Democrats don't win? That fits like a tinfoil hat with her irresponsible attack on Ohio's voting machines.

Raw partisanship? Ring the jackpot bell.

"Well, I tell you what, it helps in Ohio that we've got Democrats in charge of the machines," Barack Obama said on Sept. 3.

I think he was talking about Brunner - the partisan secretary of state who is doing her best to bring Chicago elections to Ohio.

CLEVELAND - Two Ohio voters, including Domino's pizza worker Christopher Barkley , claimed yesterday that they were hounded by the community-activist group ACORN to register to vote several times, even though they made it clear they'd already signed up.

Barkley estimated he'd registered to vote "10 to 15" times after canvassers for ACORN, whose political wing has endorsed Barack Obama, relentlessly pursued him and others.

Claims such as his have sparked election officials to probe ACORN.

"I kept getting approached by folks who asked me to register," Barkley said. "They'd ask me if I was registered. I'd say yes, and they'd ask me to do it [register] again. "Some of them were getting paid to collect names. That was their sob story, and I bought it," he said.

Barkley is one of at least three people who have been subpoenaed by the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections as part of a wider inquiry into possible voter fraud by ACORN. The group seeks to register low-income voters, who skew overwhelmingly Democratic.

"You can tell them you're registered as many times as you want - they do not care," said Lateala Goins, 21, who was subpoenaed.

"They will follow you to the buses, they will follow you home, it does not matter," she told The Post.

She added that she never put down an address on any of the registration forms, just her name.

A third subpoenaed voter, Freddie Johnson, 19, filled out registration cards 72 times over 18 months, officials said.

"It feeds the public perception that there could be [fraud], and that makes the pillars fall down," said local Board of Elections President Jeff Hastings.
Registering under a fake name is illegal. But officials usually catch multiple registrations and toss them.

The major risk of fraud growing out of mass canvassing involves the possibility of ineligible voters filing absentee ballots, and thus avoiding checks at polling places, said Republican National Committee chief counsel Sean Cairncross.
The subpoenas come as Republicans have ramped up criticism of ACORN. Officials in Nevada raided ACORN's Las Vegas office Tuesday, accusing the group of signing people up multiple times - in some cases under phony names, like those of Dallas Cowboys.

ACORN's Cleveland spokesman, Kris Harsh, said his group collected 100,000 voter-registration cards; only about 50 were questionable, he claimed.

As for workers, "We watch them like a hawk," he said.

HOMELESS 'DRIVEN' TO VOTE OBAMA

CLEVELAND - Volunteers supporting Barack Obama picked up hundreds of people at homeless shelters, soup kitchens and drug-rehab centers and drove them to a polling place yesterday on the last day that Ohioans could register and vote on the same day, almost no questions asked.

The huge effort by a pro-Obama group, Vote Today Ohio, takes advantage of a quirk in the state's elections laws that allows people to register and cast ballots at the same time without having to prove residency.

Republicans have argued that the window could lead to widespread voter fraud because officials wouldn't have an opportunity to verify registration information before ballots were cast.

Among the volunteers were Yori Stadlin and Vivian Lehrer of the Upper West Side, who got married last week and decided to spend their honeymoon shepherding voters to the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections.

Early today, Stadlin's van picked up William Woods, 59, at the soup kitchen of the Bishop Cosgrove Center.

"I never voted before," Woods said, because of a felony conviction that previously barred him from the polls. "Without this service, I would have had no way to get here."
