Attorney General Michael Mukasey collapses while giving a speech

WASHINGTON -- Attorney General Michael Mukasey collapsed while giving a speech on national security to a prominent conservative lawyers' organization.

In this Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2007, file photo, Attorney General Michael Mukasey addresses the American Bar Association.

Mr. Mukasey, 67 years old, appeared to slur his words about 20 minutes into his speech at the Federalist Society's annual dinner, held in the Wardman Park Hotel in Washington. Mr. Mukasey was defending the Bush administration's anti-terrorism policies in front of an audience of about 400.

Federal Bureau of Investigation agents, who provide security for the attorney general, rushed to his aid before he fell to the floor.

Mr. Mukasey appeared to be somewhat alert as he was carried on a stretcher by District of Columbia fire department medics. He was heard to say he thought he had fainted. A medic could be heard to tell the attorney general "just relax."

He was taken to George Washington University Medical Center and appeared to be alert and in good condition, according to the D.C. Fire Department.

Mr. Mukasey became attorney general in 2007. At Justice, he has won plaudits for his no-nonsense style.

The Speech that Never Was

The Speech that Never Was; Sarah Palin's speech intended to be delivered on September 22, 2008 at a rally in Dag Hammarskjold Plaza to protest the appearance there of President Ahmadinejad of Iran. Her appearance was canceled by rally organizers who sought a "nonpolitical" event. Following are the remarks Governor Palin would have given:

I am honored to be with you and with leaders from across this great country — leaders from different faiths and political parties united in a single voice of outrage.

Tomorrow, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will come to New York — to the heart of what he calls the Great Satan — and speak freely in this, a country whose demise he has called for.

Ahmadinejad may choose his words carefully, but underneath all of the rhetoric is an agenda that threatens all who seek a safer and freer world. We gather here today to highlight the Iranian dictator's intentions and to call for action to thwart him.

He must be stopped.

Palin Speech Rocks the House!!!

It turns out that Sarah Palin did not only rock the GOP convention. She rocked our living rooms as well according to the Nielson ratings wire reports.
Sarah Palin Popularity Soars!

Sarah Palin’s moment in
history attracted more television viewers than any night of any GOP convention in history. Her television ratings rivaled Barack Obama’s speech last week as Right Pundits predicted would happen.
She was just 1.1 million viewers under Obama’s audience of 38.3 million but she commanded a relatively higher percentage of viewers who were watching TV on the respective nights. Barracuda Sarah has the
wow factor.

She drew in this audience while her speech was covered on only six TV networks. Obama was carried by ten. Perhaps significantly Sarah Palin attracted a larger female audience than he did in Denver, and she attracted a larger Hispanic audience. She attracted more of the elderly, more family households, and more white voters. However she attracted far less African-American viewers which explains the 1.1 million difference between the two speeches.

Our article yesterday on the Palin explosion attracted the usual partisans from
left and right. But I was struck by the warmth expressed by those who were previously disillusioned by politics, and by the gushing reviews from people outside the country. Here is one new Sarah Palin fan from Europe:

As a Brit: She’s the most exciting political speaker I’ve heard for a long time. Wish we had someone, anyone like her over here. Don’t agree with all her politics, but a strong America is what we hope for here, and she and John McCain exude confidence and decisiveness. I like that. More power to your elbow Sarah Palin! I think we’ll always know what you stand for even when we don’t all agree with you!

Here are some more details of her smashing success on TV:

- The Sara Palin speech generated 37.2 million viewers, just a 1.1 million viewers short of Barak Obama’s record-breaking speech on Day 4 of the Democratic Convention. The Palin speech was carried on only six networks while the Obama speech was carried on ten (including BET, TV One, Univision and Telemundo).

- Palin attracted a large female audience (19.5 million women, or 4.9 million more than Day 3 of the Democratic Convention).

- Ratings for viewers 55+ (25.2) continue to be about ten times higher than for teens (2.2)

- Day 3 for the GOP attracted more Hispanic viewers (1.4 million) than Day 3 of the Democratic Convention (1.2 million), even though Univision and Telemundo did not carry the speech.
