Is Sarah Palin Jewish?

Is Sarah Palin Jewish?

Yes and No. She is a fundamentalist Christian, but her mother was Jewish. Sarah Sheerhan, Palin's mother married Charles Heath, an evangelical, who instilled a strong religious faith in the family.

She was not a supporter of Pat Buchanan's presidential bid in 2000, as some Democratic partisans have falsely claimed. Buchanan, a very conservative Catholic, is not popular among most Jewish voters due to his far right-wing views on the relationship between church and state, his occasional positive statements on the Nazi movement, and his lack of support for Israel.

In 2000 Palin supported Steve Forbes, not Buchanan.

Palin's Initial Backers

Palin was first introduced to politics by two Jewish fellas, Mayor John Stein, and police chief Irving Staumbaugh.

UPDATE: There are several genealogies circulating on the net claiming she’s a descendant of one Schmuel Sheigam, a Lithuanian Jew.
A National Archives search of immigration records shows no Sheigam - or Sheeran, as the Ellis Island transformation would have it, according to these accounts - arriving in 1915. (And yes, all possible spellings were run.) Sheigam doesn’t turn up, period.

There is a grain of truth in this, as there often is with urban myths: Records (ship manifests, censuses, property records etc.) show that Sheeran is indeed a common Irish American name, and one that some immigrants, evidently Jewish, adopted upon their arrival.

Nothing has turned up to refute the rest of her mother's Jewish ancestry.

Please note: It is not our intent to suggest that Sarah Palin is of the Jewish faith. But as genealogists, we think her genetic background is both interesting and important. JC and PF editors

Sarah Palin related to Princess Diana and Franklin D Roosevelt

The following article which appeared today on the http://www.telegraph.co.uk/ website is interesting to compare to my original article published here on September 16. Janet Crain

http://sarah-palin-2008.blogspot.com/2008/09/all-in-family.html

Sarah Palin related to Princess Diana and Franklin D Roosevelt
Sarah Palin, the Republican Vice-presidential nominee, is related to Princess Diana, according to genealogists.

By Chris Irvine Last Updated: 1:24AM BST 09 Oct 2008

John McCain's running mate in the US elections is supposedly a 10th cousin of Princes William and Harry's late mother. Mrs Palin, the Governor of Alaska, is also related to Democrat President Franklin D Roosevelt, the man who steered the US through the Great Depression and World War II.

According to research experts Ancestry.com, Governor Palin is the ninth cousin once removed of the man whose New Deal scheme is widely credited to have re-invigorated the US economy in the 1930s. Their common ancestor is Rev John Lothrop, who came to Massachusetts in 1634. Mrs Palin and Princess Diana are descended from John Strong and his wife Abigail Ford. Strong was born around 1605 in England and emigrated to the United States.

Ancestry.com's chief family historian Megan Smolenyak said: "When you've got candidates who have deep roots in America, there's a good chance that they're going to have some famous cousins.

"We've all got literally millions of cousins. The trick is finding that one little connection that results in something like Sarah Palin being related to FDR or Diana."

The genealogical connections are not the first made in the US presidential campaign.

Last year, Lynne Cheney, wife of current US Vice President Dick Cheney, found she was a distant cousin of Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama.

The news comes as French actress Brigitte Bardot, described Mrs Palin, 44, as a "disgrace to women".

Miss Bardot described Mrs Palin as "disconcertingly stupid" for "denying the responsibility of man in global warming" and "by advocating gun rights."
She also said of the self-styled "Pitbull with lipstick": "I know dogs well and I can assure you that no pitbull, no dog, nor any other animal is as dangerous as you are.

"You are a disgrace to women and you alone represent a terrible threat, a true environmental catastrophe."

And it might be added, if I were so inclined to be uncharitable to elderly French actresses, that Ms.Bardot, herself, is a a true mental catastrophe. But I will just point out she supports PETA which advocates violence toward human beings. JC

Statements by PETA's New Pro-Violence Promoter

"Do not be afraid to condone arsons at places of animal torture."
"It's not about loving animals. It's about fighting injustice. My whole goal is for humans to have as little contact as possible with animals."
If an "animal abuser" were killed in a research lab firebombing, "I would unequivocally support that, too."
These are just a few of the outrageous comments spewed over the years by one Gary Yourofsky, formerly president of the animal rights group ADAPTT -- and now a national lecturer for PETA.

Brigitte Bardot writes to Sarah Palin Wednesday, 10:39 PM

FONDATION BRIGITTE BARDOT
Paris,
7 Octobre 2008

Madame Sarah Palin Gouverneur d’Alaska
P.O. Box 110001
Juneau, AK 99811-0001

USA Governor, More than two years ago, I contacted your predecessor to denounce the cruelty of aerial wolf hunting. Today I am shocked to learn that you firmly support this cowardly practice, both morally and financially.

Your fight to keep polar bears off the Endangered Species list even though they are threatened by global warming demonstrates your total irresponsibility, your inability to protect or even respect animal life, but it's true that for you, a good animal is a dead one! By campaigning for drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, you are putting an already fragile habitat at risk, as well as all the biodiversity of a sensitive area that must absolutely be preserved.

Governor, by denying man's responsibility for global warming, by being a proponent of the right to bear arms and shoot anything that moves, by making numerous declarations of alarming stupidity, you bring shame upon women and represent, all on your own, a terrible threat, a true ecological catastrophe. Defending life means showing compassion for all the beings that populate this ailing earth. Since we are only on this earth for a short time, think of what you are leaving behind for future generations...

To finish, I beg you to no longer refer to yourself as a 'pit bull with lipstick', since I can assure you that no pit bull, no dog, nor any other animal is as dangerous as you.

In the name of the respect and preservation of nature, I hope that you lose this election, because then the whole world will win!

Brigitte Bardot President

Of course, Ms. Bardot, like so many, misquotes Sarah Palin's position on Global Warming. She has stated while some may be from man made activities, some may be cyclical.

Many prominent scientists agree. In fact, some discount a man made cause of global warming entirely. JC

All in the Family

by Janet Crain
Sep 21, 2008

UPDATED: Surprising to some, but not to genealogists, Sarah Palin is related to both McCain and Obama, all of them sharing descent from several of the nation's colonial era founding families. Since most Americans with ancestors in the Colonies in the 1600's share multiple progenitors this is actually quite common. She is a 12th cousin to McCain and probably of a simular degree to Obama.

The Republican vice presidential candidate descends from founding forebears; the Capens, Chipmans, Curtises, Freemans, Gilberts, Gorhams, Lothrops, Sears, Strongs, Welles and Willard, all prominent New England families.

Palin’s Mayflower ancestors include William Brewster, John Howland, Stephen Hopkins, Joan (Hurst) Rogers, John and Elizabeth Tilley, and Richard Warren. She also descends from Thomas Prence, an early governor of Plymouth Colony.

President Bush, Barack Obama and Sarah Palin all descend from Samuel and Sarah (Soule) Hinckley. Sarah's uncle was George Soule, Mayflower passenger and signer of the Mayflower Compact. Samuel and Sarah's son, Thomas Hinckley (1618-1706), held several governmental posts in the Plymouth Colony and served as its last governor from 1681 to 1692.

Palin, Obama and McCain all claim William 1, King of Scots, as an ancestor. Her descent in this Carolingian line is via ancestor Edmond Hawes (1612-1693) of Yarmouth, MA, who held many local offices.

She also descends from Henry III of England by way of ancestor Edward Raynsford who died in 1680 in Boston. Henry III was a Plantagenet descendant of Charlemagne, his parents were King John and Isabella of Angoulême and his grandmother the indomnible and beautiful Eleanor of Aquitaine. Wife of both a French and English king and mother of two kings of England, Eleanor was without doubt the most intriguing woman of her time.

She also descends at least two ways from Empress Matilda, granddaughter of William the Conqueror and the first female ruler, although uncrowned and for a brief time, of the Kingdom of England.

One of Matilda's descendants was the Rev. John Lathrop/Lothrop, a 1605 Cambridge University graduate who was ordained an Anglican priest in England, but joined the dissenters, heading a secret congregation in London who was caught and imprisoned. He was fortunate enough to be released on the condition that he and his family immediately leave for America. He may have gotten off lucky because he came from a family with a noble background.

Quite possibly Sarah Palin has multiple Royal ancestral lines and possibly trumps the other candidates in this regard, though McCain is said to do alright himself. McCain descends two ways from Edward I, King of England, who died in 1307. These descents are through his ancestors Ann (Coddington) Fenner and Anne Hampden. Both lines are documented in The Royal Descents of 600 Immigrants, by Gary Boyd Roberts (2008: Baltimore), as is Obama’s descent from Edward I.

The late Harold Brooks-Baker, who was the publisher of Burke's Peerage, posited the theory that the candidates most likely to be elected were those who had the most royal lineage in their ancestry. Sarah Palin has two separate so-called "Gateway Ancestors" who are directly descended from kings of England and Scotland.

Additionally Palin has ancestors who emigrated from the East Anglia county.
According to family tree website ancestry.co.uk the vice-presidential candidate's great, great, great, great, great grandfather Robert Gower was baptised in Norwich in 1723.

Gower is responsible for taking the family on the perilous journey across the Atlantic to begin a new life in America.

As well as the Norfolk connection, the governor of Alaska also has roots from across Europe, with two maternal great grandparents born in Germany - Mary Scholmtz, born in Frankfurt in 1860, and Charles Mueller, who travelled to the USA with his wife.

Sarah Palin shares ancestor John Lathrop with presidents Ulysses S. Grant, Franklin D. Roosevelt and both Bush presidents. Lathrop descendants include Revolutionary War traitor Benedict Arnold, Joseph Smith, founder of the Mormon religion, poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Dr. Benjamin Spock, financier John Pierpoint Morgan and the original fuller brush man, Alfred Fuller, also; Adlai Stevenson, John Foster Dulles, Thomas Dewey and one time presidential hopeful Mitt Romney.

What a mixed dinner party these interesting cousins could make.
