A new poll by American Research Group shows John McCain 21 points ahead of Barack Obama in Texas, 57 percent to 36 percent. One key finding is a 2-to-1 McCain advantage among independents.

Here's another: After mentioning both Sarah Palin and Joe Biden in the horse race question, the survey found Obama-Biden trailing McCain-Palin among women. They broke for the GOP ticket, 54 percent to 39 percent.

American Research Group was described by the Capitol Hill publication Roll Call in July as a "GOP firm," though other news outlets have called its leader, Dick Bennett, a nonpartisan pollster. It interviewed 600 likely Texas voters from Saturday through Tuesday. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
